“Steps,” is a ballad where Cole begins to navigate one foot in front of the other out of darkness—which can often feel like you’re stuck in the mud when fighting against the numbness of depression. Hip-hop artist Big Jess weaves a captivating urban poem about overcoming addiction over the lush atmospheric outro of the single “Steps”. The song begins quite literally on a positive note, as we hear an exhale, followed quickly by the echoey chime of an acoustic guitar that prologues the narrative. Soft percussion layers in tactfully as if it’s easing the worry of a mind troubled by sorrow. Cassandra’s singing almost drifts into an ethereal, ghost-like quality during the moments where her voice doubles up with subtle harmonies. It’s a pleasant contrast to some of her more high-octane tracks, where she offers the sensation of what it feels like to have anxiety.

In “Steps,” she expresses what it takes to move out of it. “We as people have a deep desire to be stronger than we are sometimes capable of,” Cole submits. “Steps embodies the need to take physical steps forward, even when you’re feeling low and numb. Human relationships help keep us together and keep us moving in the right direction.”
